Pakistan Appoints ISI Chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik as New National Security Adviser
Pakistan has appointed the serving head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, as the new National Security Adviser (NSA), according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Tuesday.
Lt Gen Malik, who is currently serving as the Director General of Pakistan's premier intelligence agency, will now hold the additional charge of NSA. This is the first time in Pakistan's history that a serving ISI chief has been entrusted with both key positions concurrently.
Lt Gen Malik was appointed as the Director General of ISI in October 2024, and now he will also take on the responsibility of NSA.
The notification stated, "Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik HI (M), DG (I), shall hold the additional charge of the National Security Adviser, with immediate effect."
